I study the politics of immigration and multiculturalism.
Welcome to my website! I am Nicholas A. R. Fraser (he/him/his), a Senior Research Associate at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration. I study the politics of immigration and multi-culturalism. Through my research, I address questions about inclusion and exclusion.
Broadly, my research lies at the intersection of comparative politics and public policy. Specifically, I draw on the theories and methods from both political science subfields to explore how political elites and the public think about and influence policy toward (im)migrant and minority populations. Most of my work focuses on political behaviour in wealthy democracies including Canada and Japan, crucial cases for explaining immigration politics.
After receiving my PhD in 2020 from the University of Toronto’s Department of Political Science, I was a John A. Sproul Research Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley’s Canadian Studies Program (2021-2022), and then a Policy Innovations Fellow at Harvard University’s Program on U.S.-Japan Relations (2022-2023).
